Ryu: Inking New Realms and Capturing the Untamed
RYu is a visionary tattoo artist and photographer from Korea, known for her unyielding dedication to breaking artistic norms and embracing a spectrum of creativity that defies conventional categorization. Her work is an array of influences and mediums, characterised by her fearless use of form.
How did you begin your career in tattooing and photography?
I started because I felt a strong pull towards creativity—it brings me joy. Everything I like, whether it's a magazine, music, or something I see on the street, sparks my interest. I'm particularly drawn to music, and I’m hoping to venture into creating music myself.
Ryu’s journey began on the canvas of skin, where she mastered the art of storytelling through intricate tattoos. Each design she creates is more than just a mark; it is a narrative, a permanent emblem of her client's personal saga or desires, meticulously crafted to reflect individual identities.
Who has influenced your work the most?
My friends, mostly. I don’t really keep up with the tattoo industry anymore. I like seeing what my friends are working on and how different their work is, which influences my style. I can't single out just one person.
Expanding her creative repertoire, Ryu ventured into the world of photography with a fresh perspective, aiming to capture fleeting moments with the same intensity and passion she brings to her tattoos. Her photographic work is an extension of her exploratory nature, often focusing on raw, unfiltered scenes that challenge viewers’ perceptions and evoke deep emotions. Ryu’s lens is drawn to the edges of society, the overlooked beauty, and the interplay between light and shadow.
What themes are you exploring in your photography?
Currently, my work is very free and flexible, which I enjoy. But next time, I want to try something highly conceptual—like a super-set, very planned out with set designs, something that visualises futuristic vibes.
As she travels, Ryu absorbs the essence of each culture she encounters, weaving these experiences into her work, making it resonate with a global audience. Her approach is both nomadic and intimate, influenced by her interactions, the stories she hears, and the landscapes she traverses.
Which tattoo of yours holds significant personal meaning?
Probably my face tattoo because it's something people always comment on. Also, I really love the color red. The most significant tattoo I've given someone was on my friend’s hand, which stands out in my memory because he passed away a month later.
Looking ahead, Ryu is set on merging her artistic talents with music, aiming to create a multisensory experience that blends visual art, sound, and narrative in an expression of her inner world. She envisions projects that are not only seen and felt but also heard, creating a holistic artistic experience that captivates all senses.
What do you enjoy outside of your work?
Dancing, chilling with good people, and being silly
Ryu is not just creating art; she is redefining what it means to be an artist in a modern world that craves authenticity and innovation. Her legacy, built on the foundation of boldness and originality, promises to inspire a new generation of artists to think beyond the ink and the image.
What legacy do you hope to leave?
I really have no idea about this, but if I had to choose something right now, maybe something like love or luck.
